“Predator” Reboot a Go!

Will Arnold be back?

There were rumours early this year that the Predator franchise was finally going to be brought back (outside of the deplorable AvP films, of course), and director Robert Rodriguez has confirmed the news today. According to IESB, Rodriguez stated in a press conference, when discussing his Troublemaker Studios company:

I’m going to be able to shoot my upcoming Machete here, a sci-fi action film called Nervewrackers, a re-boot of the Predator series called Predators, and a couple of smaller movies called Sin City 2 and The Jetsons.

Wow. Predators was originally a screenplay written by Rodriguez years ago, but it never got off the ground because the project was reportedly too expensive to produce. It involved a group of mercenaries (at the time, I believe Arnie and Danny Glover had been written into the script) that were sent to a Predator planet, where they were captured and forced to perform in Thunderdome style gladiator battles.

I’m all for a Predator sequel, although the term “reboot” is iffy, and I’m not sure I trust Rodriguez with this material. He’s an inconsistent director, to say the least, and I don’t know if he’s right for it. But that’s just me. Plus, if it’s a reboot, I guess that means Arnie’s out — and it had earlier been hinted that he was interested in returning to the role as a first project after his stint as Governor ended. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
